The main problem that this Survival Manual for Toki Dwellers is focusing on are: The lost of social interactivity and communication that cannot be transformed from their domestic lives through their individual will or communal practices.
Both physical conditions and methodological organization segregates and prevents the activation of the TOKI dwellers. The question is: Is it possible to create emancipatory public spaces, the search for the spatial justice in such building blocks, which are segregating the urban life, erasing the social and cultural practices, and devastating the notion of “place”. “Place” gains it’s meaning and empower within the everyday life and heritage of socio-cultural accumulation. How is possible if everything related to “place” has been devastated? This is not an easy question to answer.
This manual has the provocative and triggering role in order to remind our common demand on to act and communicate in a common and collective spatial organization. Thus, the demands and needs of TOKI dwellers are very vital and important.

I wish the creators of this work had the respect to consult the authour of the thesis which they used throughout their work. Unfortunately, the English translations are inadequate. Furthermore, starting from p:32 , reference to my thesis is terminated for some unknown reason, giving the impression that the interviews henceforth were made by the group itself. What is more, the UN Commitee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR)is turned into UN General Assembly , more than a serious fallacy.

During our study of “TOKI Dwellers the Survival Manual,” there were many literature reviews and research conducted. Your thesis was one of the most helpful sources in many ways. Besides literature reviews, on-site evaluations, interviews and video recordings were also a part of our group’s research methods.
We have visualized and simplified as a summary all the data we could reach within the scope of a structure. English translation of the work has been provided from different sources through the Design Biennale itself. On the process, we were precise with indicating the references (though, not as precise as an academic work) of the works that have been helpful to us like yours.
The reason of interruption in referencing that you pointed as missing starting from page 32(but there are references at page 33 and 34, too) and the impression of the interviews conducted by our group, as I stated above, consisted of field studies and on-site interviews(If you like, we can share them with you). Additionally, I think that in the section that does not include any direct quotation starting on page 35, more than transferring some data, our comments, analyses, manual pages are beginning.
The other point that you have mentioned is addressed on page 23 and 24: “Residential units suitable for living according to “The General Comment no:4 (1991)” United Nations General Assembly, International Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR); 7 points are underlined with regards to residential units suitable for living:”
You have stated that Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights has been indicated as United Nations (UN) General Assembly. As it is stated at your thesis on page 130, it is true that “International Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights” has been prepared by UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
We believe that the misunderstanding that has arisen from our sentence is related to its structure rather than its content. Before saying by whom the convention has been prepared, indicating that United Nations (UN) General Assembly’s emphasizing might have caused the reader to mistake who the author of convention was.
We might have missed some points that you mentioned since our final output format has been evolved in a way that is supported by a visualized story in late process. To not cause different interpretations, we are going to check the points you are sensitive on and make corrections according to your request about changing “BMGK” abbreviation to “BM-Ekonomik, Sosyal,Kulturel Haklar Komitesi (ESKHK) 4 Numaralı Genel Yorum” in Turkish text and English translation as it has to be.

“Tokigiller Yaşam Mücadele Rehberi” çalışmaları sırasında pek çok kaynak tarandı ve araştırmalar yapıldı. Bu konuda teziniz bize gerçekten pek çok noktada kaynaklık etti.
Bu kaynaklarla yetinilmeyip, saha araştırması olarak, tarafımızdan yerinde tespitler, röportajlar ve video kayıtları da yapıldı.
Bütün bu verileri bir kurgu kapsamında ve özet olarak basitleştirip, görselleştirmeye çalıştık. Metnin İngilizce olarak çevrilmesi Bienal aracılığı ile farklı birkaç kaynak ile sağlandı. Bu süreçte sizin teziniz gibi aldığımız kaynakları belirtmeyi (bir akademik çalışma titizliğinde olmasa da) elimizden geldiğince atlamamaya çalıştık.
32. sayfadan sonra başladığını belirttiğiniz ( ki 33.-34. sayfalarda da tez referansınız var :)) referans eksikliklerinin ve röportajların tarafımızdan yapılmış gibi algılanmasının nedeni, yukarıda da belirttiğim gibi, bizim tarafımızdan da yapılmış olan saha röportajlarının varlığı düşünüyorum(Dilerseniz bu kayıtları sizle de paylaşabiliriz). Ayrıca doğrudan alıntılama içermeyen, 35. sayfadan itibaren başlayan bölümde ise bir veri aktarımından çok bizim yorum/analiz/rehber sayfalarımızın başlangıcının yer aldığını düşünüyorum.
Bir diğer belirttiğiniz nokta ise, rehberin 23. ve 24. sayfalarında belirtilen “Yaşamaya elverişli konutlar -4 No’lu Genel Yorum (1991)- Birleşmiş Milletler Genel Kurulu (BMGK), Ekonomik,Sosyal ve Kültürel Haklara İlişkin Uluslararası Sözleşme(ESKHS)’ye göre; yaşamaya elverişli konutlar için 7 maddenin altını çizer:” cümlesine ilişkin.
“Ekonomik, Sosyal, Kültürel Haklar Komitesi,” Birleşmiş Milletler Genel Kurulu (BMGK), olarak belirtilmiş demişsiniz. Ekonomik,Sosyal ve Kültürel Haklara ilişkin Uluslararası Sözleşme’ nin; tezinizin 130. sayfasında da belirtildiği gibi “Ekonomik, Sosyal, Kültürel Haklar Komitesi” tarafından hazırlandığı doğrudur.
Cümlemizden kaynaklandığına inandığımız yanlış anlamanın, içerikten öte cümle yapısı ile ilgili olduğunu düşünüyoruz. Sözleşmenin kim tarafından hazırlandığını söylemeden, Birleşmiş Milletler(BM)Genel Kurulu’nun konunun altını çizdiğini söylemek; bu sözleşmenin kim tarafından hazırlandığı konusunda okuyanı çıkarımsal bir hataya zorluyor olabilir.
Sonrasında belirlediğimiz ürünün formatı, görselleştirilmiş bir hikaye ile desteklenen bir biçim kazandığından, bahsettiğiniz detaylarda bazı şeyleri atlamış olabiliriz. Farklı yorumlara sebebiyet vermemek için talebiniz doğrultusunda “BMGK kisaltmasinin BM-Ekonomik, Sosyal,Kulturel Haklar Komitesi (ESKHK) 4 Numaralı Genel Yorum…” olarak duzelterek; hassasiyet gösterdiğiniz diğer noktalara ilişlin gerekli kontrolleri yeniden yapacağız.
